What is it like to set a philanthropic example for future owners?
“It’s important to give back. Philosophically, not only do we want to give money, but we want to be involved. It’s easy to write a check and say, ‘Here’s what we did.’ I think it’s important for me to be involved. Some drivers really get involved with the Nascar Foundation, and I know other others do, as well. I’m the face of the Kaulig Companies, and I should be leading the organization with all of those efforts. It helps everybody get involved if I’m involved.”
What has this year been like for you?
“It’s been fun. We didn’t know getting into full-time Cup racing that we only have one weekend off during the season. It’s been an incredible season and learning experience for our team. This is our freshman year. At Bristol, we finished seventh and 12th. These guys in the Cup Series are serious and they’re really good. For us to be able to hang with the best of the best in our first year of competition, I’m really proud of the team and how we’ve handled it. This is seven years in the Xfinity Series and we’re trying to win a championship.”
What was it like to just be involved in the Kyle Busch contract discussions?
“On purpose, we’re trying to move ourselves through the ranks, even in Cup, with the manufacturer and with the other teams. People within the sport – maybe Kyle is a good example of that – see our seriousness and how much we want to win. We want to be in the sport for a long time. I’m 49 years old, and we’re loving it and having fun with it. We’re young, growing and, if you look back historically at some of the teams who are winning races, where they were in year one or two.”
